Well, until I remember, I’ll just tell you that I’ve been digging on AboutUs.org lately. They’ve got some really easy to use tools for testing your site, but the heart of it is a giant wiki for any website on the internet. Go edit your own site, or improve on a page for a group you want to help out.

Links are nofollow by default, but if you do a good job with your page, they’ll mark dofollow after a request to a live human.

Oh, they also have a blog with some seo tips, and a frequent weekly project page to improve (generally a charity picked by volunteers to work on as a group).

Sometimes your backlog of pending can become a nightmare

Last week I talked about one issue with RSS Feeds… duplication. This week, I’m going to show you how to go scorched earth on your unmanageable backlog of pending posts.

If you’ve set up an autoblogger like Feedwordpress, you’ve no doubt made the mistake of not setting them to mark as pending before running your first fetch… Four hours later, after the cleanup on your site, and stripping out all your automatic notifications to twitter or elsewhere, you’ll never ever make that mistake again…

So, you learn to set your feeds to pending review before they go live… at least to begin with. This is great; it lets you manage pace, tweak text to be more keyword friendly and unique for your site, yadda yadda… But if you let it go unattended for a while, you can end up with a huge backlog that just isn’t worth the effort of sifting through.

WordPress doesn’t have an easy way to purge your entire pending list… not unless you consider stepping through and bulk deleting 20 posts at a time to be easy. But if you have direct database access, you can go scorched earth on your backlog like so:

You can turn off this feature to get a quicker startup with -A

mysql> update wp_posts set post_status='trash' where post_status='pending';
Query OK, 929 rows affected (0.05 sec)

And just like that, all your pending posts are now in the trash. Unlike other status categories for posts, the Trash DOES have a handy one click step to backlog tranquility.

DON'T PANIC! ... unless you wanted some of those...

The reason I don’t just delete them from within the database is that there can be images associated with those posts in the wp_posts table that would be left orphaned, so I just figure its best to let wordpress handle that part.

The joys of autoblogging... Duplicate posts galore!

I was testing out RSS feeds on one of my sites and found that Feedwordpress was quite happy to post a half dozen copies of the same article. WordPress just adds a -2 to the end and carries on.

But you don’t really want duplication like that… Search engines don’t like it, readers don’t like it… what’s the point?

First thing I did was grab a copy of “Delete Duplicate Posts” from CleverPlugins.com. (Sadly, their site is currently offline due to the death of one of the business partners)

This plugin isn’t very sophisticated, but if you know you have a ton of dupes, this is an easy way to clear them out… Be careful, though. It considers anything with the same title to be a duplicate and doesn’t look at content. One of my sites claimed to have a dozen dupes, but after looking at them, all of the content was different; only the title was the same.

So, once you’ve removed those 150 duplicate posts (ugh, left that unattended way too long), you’ll want to generate a new sitemap so you stop telling the search engines to go to posts that no longer exist.

Great, but what about all those old broken links out there? Anyone still trickling in and getting 404′s cause you wiped out version 4 of “Blonde Sexpot Rides Her Stepson’s Big Cock“? Apache to the rescue!

Here’s my redirect rule to catch that case… It pulls in any post that ends in -2 (2-6 actually) and then sends you back to the site with that last bit stripped off.

Now, this could work out badly for you, if you have legitimate posts with that number at the end… And you may need to tweak that number range (hopefully you can shrink it instead of expand it)… but I’ll leave that to you to work out… Or ask me in the comments below!

So, it turns out that a while back, MySpace put something in place to keep evil marketing people like me and you from taking advantage of their site… They did this by way of a new domain, msplinks.com… All outbound links from myspace get rewritten to a msplinks.com address (think bit.ly) before getting redirected on to the ultimate target.

This would still be fine for SEO except that they pass this redirect as a 302… So search engines ignore the target and give credit back to the origin, which is msplinks…

They also look at the referrer that gets passed and redirect you to myspace if you aren’t coming from there, so you can’t use it as your leet hax0r bit.ly server that nobody else knows about…

Oh well, fuck myspace. I haven’t seen layout that shitty since my first geocities page.

The idea was inspired by reading “20 More Hardcore SEO Tips“. I’m sure you’ll be hearing more ideas from Mr Martinez coming out of my mouth for the next few weeks…

Adult Domain Parking

Those of you who have read the title of this blog may not be surprised to learn that I am an adult webmaster. If you’ve seen my tumblr, you may even know that I’m a noob webmaster of epic proportions… So, along with this comes the fact that I’m constantly discovering nifty new things… Such as today’s topic: ADULT DOMAIN PARKING

I’ve been kicking the idea of a redhead photo site for a while but wasn’t sure I had the time to get it up and running properly… but I found myself poking around on one of my networks, checking stats, when I noticed a link that had been staring me in the face for months… “Domain Parking”.

Holy crap, you mean I can reg this domain and just point it at you to handle everything?!

Well, yes and no… First, you go register your site for sultry pale redheads…

Then you get your domain pointed over to the pimproll name servers… log in to your account, go set up your domain (you can set up some cross-links, google analytics, pick a niche)… Then you’re set. It should propagate in an hour or so and you can sit back and wait for your check.

Go reg a bunch of cheap domains and park them. Want to actually develop one? Repoint dns to your main site and voila! If you’re familiar with domain aging, this is a way to get some use out of your freshly registered domains until they’ve been around a while.
